English: Rear-Admiral Sir John Munden, c. 1645-1719 A three-quarter length portrait to right, showing Munden standing to one side of a stone pillar. He wears a buff coat, a breastplate and a full bottom wig with a red sash round his waist. His right hand rests against a pillar, and he holds his sword in his left hand. In the right background his ship the ‘Lennox’ is shown engaged at the battle of Barfleur, 1692. He commanded the ‘Lennox’ at the battle. In 1699 he took a squadron to the Mediterranean, where he successfully negotiated with the Bey of Algiers for the release of many English slaves. He was knighted in 1701, after he had escorted King William III to Holland. This portrait was made in 1705, by which time Munden was Rear-Admiral of the Red. Its is signed and dated ‘Mich Dahl pinx 1705’, and inscribed ‘Sir John Munden’. |
