Cryptococcus neoformans är en svampart^[19] som först beskrevs av San Felice, och fick sitt nu gällande namn av Paul Vuillemin 1901. Cryptococcus neoformans ingår i släktet Cryptococcus och familjen Tremellaceae.^[20]^[21]
