Enligt Catalogue of Life[48][49] ingår Sumpvitmossa i släktet vitmossor och familjen Sphagnaceae, men enligt Dyntaxa[50] är tillhörigheten istället släktet vitmossor och familjen Sphagnaceae. Arten är reproducerande i Sverige.[50] Inga underarter finns listade i Catalogue of Life.[48]
