LITTLE SNOW-SHOES. 250 HARPERS YOUNG PEOPLE. VOLUME IT. WASHINGTON IN YOUTH. FORTUNATELY for himself and his country, Wash-ington was educated in poverty, the son of a Virginiafarmer. From his childhood he was probably employedill active labors. His father had large tracts of land thatapparently produced little money. The house in whichthe young Washington was born was small, and built ofwood. The country around was wild and thinly settled.Washington went to a country school, where the teachingwas very poor. At home in the plain country farm-househe could have learned little. His mother was an excel-lent woman, and taught her son industry and honesty. His father died when he was a child, and his mother, whowas his fathers second wife, was left to support herself andher children from her farm.
