To specify your sources for what you have written on Wikipedia is a great service to the readers. This way the readers can themselves both confirm the information and read more on the subject. At the moment too many articles lack or have too few citations. It does not take long to add a source, especially when you do it right away.
Exercise 1: Locate a source
redigera
- Go to a Wikipedia article that you are interested in by typing the name in the search box.
- Click "Edit", either at the top of the page or next to a section title within the articles.
- Write something new or pick a claim that needs to be supported by a citation.
- Use the Internet and books or magazines you have access to. Look for a section in the text that supports what is in the Wikipedia article.
- If the source says otherwise, change the Wikipedia text so that the assertion is correct. Remember that you are not allowed to plagiarize the text but that you must rephrase the part that you add.
- Add a note like this: <ref> Anita Bear, Nordic birds (1978), p. 43.</ref>
- Make sure that there is a title for the sources at the bottom of the article, and that the marking <references/> is there. That's where footnotes will end up. Otherwise you should add these to the end of the article. It should look like this:
== Sources == <references/>
- In the "Edit summary" box, write "Adding source".
- Click the "Save" button.
Exercise 2: Use a source you already have
redigera
- Find your source. You should not specify the sources from memory.
- Locate a Wikipedia article which is about the same topic as your source.
- Add sources to as many claims as you can from your source. Add a footnote for each statement like this: <ref>Richard Wiseman, The Brain (2008), p. 47, Schibsted.</Ref>
- Make sure that at the bottom of the article there is a title for the sources, and that the text <references/> is there. That's where footnotes will end up. If these are missing you should add the text to the end of the article. It should look like this:
== Sources == <references/>
- In the "Edit summary" box, write "Adding source".
- Click the "Save" button.
While you add this source, feel free to add the same source in several nearby articles. You can click on any links in the article and reuse your source references there. Other articles can be found by scrolling to the bottom of the article where you can see what categories the article is in.
Citations are a big topic. On Wikipedia there is a good explanation page of the subject.
Now you can continue to next tab in the course!
