Highsmith Archive.; Gift; The Lyda Hill Foundation; 2014; (DLC/PP-2014:054).; Constructed in the 1930s, it was one of the five Gateway Hotels in a chain built by Charles Bassett in Eastern New Mexico and West Texas. Bassett built the hotels in an attempt to encourage tourism within 200 miles of El Paso, where he was based. Renowned architect Henry C. Trost was responsible for the El Capitan's design.
