Tuber mesentericum Vittadini Image location: Tres Aguas, Refugio Forestal, Fresneda de la Sierra Tiron, Spain Christine Fischer, truffle researcher at the Forest Science Center of Catalonia, Spain, leads truffle and mushroom forays in Spain. These truffles were found using trained dogs. Christine identified the truffles and took the photos labeled T mesentericum (posted with her permission) in her laboratory. Tuber mesentericum Vittadini 1831 Peridium is black, warty with distinctive basal depression, ripening in the autumn, and found growing with deciduous trees in calcareous soils, especially in southern Europe. This truffle is closely related to and confused with T. aestivum/uncinatum, but distinguished by its basal depression or cavity. The odor is described as tar-like or of iodine, changing to a more pleasant and sweet odor when exposed to air. Gleba beige to brownish-grey with white marbling by sterile veins. Asci, with short peduncle, 1-6 spores/ascus, most frequently 3-4 spores/ascus Spores are yellow-brown, ellipsoid with reticulate ornamentation, and the spore volume/ascus is greater than that of T. aestivum. from Funghi Ipogei D’Europa Amer Montecchi & Mario Sarasini AMB Centro Studi Micologici Used references: Funghi Ipogei D’Europa Amer Montecchi & Mario Sarasini AMB Centro Studi Micologici Based on chemical features: Christine Fischer says that T mesentericum has an odor that shifts from tar-like to fruity once exposed to air.
